Inspired by Tiki Art and art of the 1950s

If you’ve ever taken a gander around my online store, you’ll notice one thing right away: I’m inspired by many types of art, from ultra realism to whimsical kids art. Lately, I’ve been most turned on by retro and minimalist patterns and design, and the color combo of orange and green. Over the weekend I’ve made two new designs out of that color combination, like my Orange Berries Portable Doodle Speaker.

But today’s post is about the second design, my Retro Inspired, 1950s Tiki Surfboard in Orange and Green. Kind of a big mouthful, right? But apt.

If you’re not familiar with it, Tiki culture was a movement in post World War America that is in part, inspired by tiki carvings and mythology, but interpreted in a very stylistic way. According to Wikipedia, Tiki culture was born in the 30s, when a trend of Polynesian tiki restaurants and bars and restaurants became popular (Trader Vic’s is the only major chain still operating), and continued after World War II when American soldiers returned home from the South Pacific with stories and souveniers of their experiences. New flights to Hawaii and Hawaiian statehood also increased interest and popularity in the Polynesian pop culture, and the stlye cropped up everywhere, from home accessories to architecture.

I wanted to create a pattern that evoked that same feeling, but had modern touches as well. The resulting design is an abstract take on both surfboards and tiki carvings, boiled down into their basic shapes and arranged in a repeating pattern. I hope you love the pop of yummy orange against the lemony green as much as I do. I think the design looks especially good on the portable doodle speakers and iPad and iPhone accessories we now offer at Koncepts by Karyn, but I’ve also added them to mugs and other products.
